Everyone loves having a go-to project for those small bits of yarn at the end of larger projects. What better way to use the ends of your skeins than by knitting up some bookmarks for yourself or others? These useful and beautiful knits can be worked quickly for last-minute gifts. They also make perfect knitting class projects, featuring easy introductions to lace, cable, and textured knitting.

Three knitted bookmark samples from Kiersten J Bookmark Trio Patterns.

Why knit the Bookmark Trio Patterns?

Almost every knitter has been in the position of wishing they had a small, hand-knitted gift they could give on short notice. Whether it’s a hostess gift, an office birthday, end-of-the-year teacher gifts, or a gift for a last-minute add to the holiday guest list, it seems there’s always an opportunity to give a special gift. The key is often to be able to make it quickly!

As a practical person, I enjoy giving gifts that are useful as well as beautiful, and a bookmark definitely falls into that category.

Imagine the satisfaction of having a few of these bookmarks ready and stashed away for those surprise moments when you need to come up with a gift quickly!

Additionally, these patterns are designed for beginning knitters with basic skills who want to try a new technique on a small scale. One has a very simple lace pattern, one has an easy cable, and the third is an exercise in using seed stitch to make a picture. Experienced knitters will memorize the patterns easily, and beginners will learn and gain confidence in new skills on tiny projects.

These make ideal class projects for knitting instructors who want to help their students learn several different knitting techniques in a project-focused class. Structuring one bookmark per session would give class time to establish the students in the individual skills needed in each bookmark, and students could complete the projects on their own and potentially create several more before the next session, if desired. The reward for effort ratio for these is high, which is a great bonus in any class project.

What are the pattern characteristics?

  • Flat construction
  • Charted and written instructions
  • Knit and purl stitches only on one bookmark
  • Simple lace stitching on one bookmark

What knitting skills do I need?

Beginning knitters will have no problem mastering this fun pattern. If you can cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, you have all the skills you need for one of the patterns, and further instructions are given for additional techniques to make the cables and the lace stitches for the other two bookmarks.
