Why knit the Fillan Cowl Pattern?
I suspect most people who have been knitting for more than a few months have acquired one or two skeins of yarn that they’re saving for the perfect project. For some people it’s the colors or the fibers that make up the yarn, but for me, with the yarn that was the inspiration for this pattern, it was all about the softness and the stitch definition. I just knew I wanted it next to my face as a cool-weather accessory.
I also wanted to use a less common cable, and one that would allow for more variegated yarns to still work well to display the cable. If you’ve worked through my other patterns, you know this is a challenge I really enjoy working on, probably because of my own attraction to multicolored hand dyed yarns. You can read more about some of the techniques I use in designing for multicolored yarn in the Lancet and Creighton Pattern articles.
Fillan has a few other things going for it as well:
- If you like cabling without a cable needle, it’s a perfect pattern for it. All of the cables are done over three stitches.
- Additionally, the cabling feeds the knitter’s “one more row” drive and makes this a really quick knit. In my book, that automatically puts a pattern into the gift knitting category.
- The unisex nature of the angular cables means you could knit several and just stash them away in preparation for whenever the next gift giving occasion arises, knowing you’re well stocked.
- Finally, because the cables are so simple (but there are some variations), Fillan makes a great beginning knitting class project, or a pattern to use when you teach a pal how to go the next step beyond knitting a dishcloth.
